What is a sprint goal?

A sprint goal is a concise statement that captures the main outcome your team is aiming to achieve in a single sprint. It links the work on the board to a shared purpose and creates a sense of focus for the sprint, so everyone feels they are pulling together towards a bigger end goal.

Why does your team need a sprint goal?

A good sprint goal keeps everyone pulling in the same direction, making it easier to decide what to pick up next and how to handle changes without losing focus.

When blockers or surprises arise, the sprint goal acts like a compass, helping the team choose the options that move them closest to the intended outcome.

A clear sprint goal gives you a simple story to share with stakeholders about what this sprint is trying to achieve and whether you’re on track, instead of purely reporting how many items are ‘done.’

What elements should a sprint goal include?

Space to write a simple statement

A sprint goal should be something simple that your team can easily refer back to, so provide a concise statement that gets to the point near the top of the page before going into details. This is like a miniature version of your team's vision statement, covering just one sprint.

Expected outcomes

To back up your statement, list a few tasks or features that your team will be working on during this sprint and their expected outcomes. This will demonstrate how the work applies to the vision for this sprint and help prioritise tasks by relevance.

The SMART framework

The SMART framework stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This is included in our template (within a collapsible section) as a useful guide to help plan your goals, but it’s important to remain agile and avoid becoming too wrapped up in strict expectations.
