What is a vision statement?

A vision statement guides teams in writing a concise description of the future they aim to create for customers and the business. It focuses on purpose, outcomes, and value, rather than detailed requirements, making it easy for agile teams to align on direction while still adapting as they learn.

Why does your team need a vision statement?

When starting out fresh, the buzz of a new product or team can make it difficult to pin down exactly what you are trying to achieve. Creating a single, shared source of truth for why the product, project, or initiative exists and what success looks like helps get everyone moving towards the same goal.

Leaders, sponsors, and customers appreciate a concise view of where the product is headed without having to wade through heavyweight documentation. By making the vision easy to share and revisit in Confluence, you reduce misunderstandings and build trust that your team is investing effort in the right problems.

Even the best plans will change as you learn more about your users and your market. Housing your vision statement in Confluence means you can update it quickly as new insights emerge, so teams aren't stuck working to an out‑of‑date idea of success.

What elements should a vision statement include?

Statement of purpose

Jon Kern suggests the best way to clarify your vision and get focused is simply to write an answer to the question “What is your business purpose?” in under 25 words. This is much more challenging than it sounds, but don’t be tempted to extend the word limit. It’s concise for a reason.

Value proposition canvas

The value proposition canvas is a tool originally created by Alex Osterwalder, Yves Pigneur, and Alan Smith to help map how your product solves real customer pains and delivers meaningful gains.
Our template suggests two ways you can display your value proposition canvas in Confluence, depending on whether you’d prefer it all on one page (using Advanced Cards) or on an embedded whiteboard.

‘Create your vision statement’ guide

Another tool you can use to narrow down your vision and put it into words is our ‘Create your vision statement’ guide: a table with a row for brainstorming components of your vision statement, a row for structuring your sentence, and a final row for tidying it up into concise wording.
