What is a Squad Health Check?

A squad health check is a tool used by agile teams to self-assess their health across various categories like teamwork, morale, workflow, and value delivery. It creates a visual snapshot of what’s going well and where there are challenges, using a simple traffic light system (green, yellow, red) to facilitate honest conversations and identify areas for improvement.

Why does your company need a Squad Health Check?

Implementing regular squad health checks can provide significant benefits for your team and the wider organisation, such as:

Fostering open and honest communication

A squad health check offers a safe, structured way for teams to share perspectives, shifting discussions from complaints to data-driven solutions for specific challenges.

Proactively identifying and addressing issues

Health checks enable teams to proactively identify and resolve issues, preventing negative impacts on morale and productivity.

Tracking progress and driving improvement

By running squad health checks periodically, teams can track their progress over time, celebrate improvements, and hold themselves accountable for addressing recurring obstacles, leading to a culture of continuous improvement.

What elements should a Squad Health Check include?

Clear instructions with an interactive banner

Ensure everyone in your team knows how to use the squad health check so that they can all take part. A great way to do this is with an Interactive Banner, which can introduce the page and give instructions without creating any clutter on the page.

Visually distinct health categories

The core of the health check is the list of categories to be assessed. Using Advanced Cards allows you to present each health indicator—such as 'Teamwork', 'Product Value', or 'Learning'—as a distinct, visually appealing element that is easy for the team to review and discuss.

Simple red-amber-green scoring with tables

To capture the team's feedback, a simple table is a highly effective tool. By using native Confluence tables with coloured cells, you can create a clear red-amber-green scoring system. This provides a quick, universally understood snapshot of the team's health. To capture feedback anonymously, just delete the ‘Your Name’ columns.
