Migrating Mosaic macros: DC → Cloud comparison guide

In this guide, we cover every macro that is supported in Cloud or natively included in Confluence Cloud, which macros aren't available, and how to create the same or better versions of Mosaic's macros in Confluence Cloud.

Good to know: Confluence Cloud Editor behaviour

If you haven't heard already, Atlassian has announced it will discontinue the Legacy Editor in early 2026. This means that migrated pages will move directly to the cloud editor. Atlassian introduced the Legacy Content macro to preserve the functionality of legacy macros migrated from Data Center.

What does this mean for you?
  • When your pages are moved to Confluence Cloud, any legacy macros will be wrapped inside the Legacy Content Macro.
  • These macros will still display and work in the cloud.
  • If a macro is nested inside the Legacy Content Macro, you can still edit its content using the new cloud editor.

Because of this, some Mosaic macros might not behave the same way, and some are no longer supported. This guide helps you understand what to expect so you can prepare for migration.

Macros that are supported in Cloud

Mosaic DC macros that are built into Confluence Cloud (no action is required)

  • Copyright
  • HTML Comment
  • HTML Image
  • Pre Tag
  • Privacy Mark and Policy
  • Registered Trademarks
  • RESTful Table
  • Rollover
  • Service Marks
  • Trademarks

Cloud versions of Mosaic DC macros that are migrated with minimal issues

  • Align
  • BibTeX Referencing
  • Button Group
  • Button Hyperlink
  • LaTeX Formatting

Macros you should adjust before migration

CSS Style Sheet
Cloud's new editor means you no longer need to use CSS to create custom styling effects. Most CSS applied to macros that are not nested within other macros will remain in effect.
You can consider flattening layouts and rebuilding using Cloud sections/columns. Or document CSS rules so you can replace them with Mosaic’s HTML macro.

Span (Inline)
These macros lose their inline behaviour unless nested inside the Legacy Content macro:
  • Span
  • Copyright
  • Footnotes
  • Highlight
  • Trademark
  • Service Marks
  • Strikethrough
You can replace these with built-in formatting (such as strikethrough, highlight, and emojis) before migration.

Legacy macros that need to be rebuilt post-migration

While these macros are no longer editable in the cloud editor, you can rebuild them using the equivalent cloud version.
  • Alert
  • Tabs
  • Background
  • Progress Bar
  • Tooltip
  • LaTeX
  • BibTeX Dialog
  • Footnotes
  • Button/Button Group

Macros that will not display in Confluence Cloud (with alternative solutions)

These macros will appear as an ‘Unknown macro’ in page view mode, though you can still view the content in edit mode. To make the content visible for users viewing a page, we recommend the following alternatives:
Unsupported macrosAlternative solutions
Message BoxReplicate the with Mosaic Background and Advanced Cards macros.
RESTful TableReplace with Confluence's native tables.
Rollover Recreate content in Mosaic's HTML macro
TooltipRebuild with the cloud version of the Tooltip macro.
HighlightReplace with Confluence's native text highlight feature.

Macros that cannot be edited in Confluence Cloud (with alternative solutions)

The following macros will display in page view mode, but will not be editable. In order to continue editing the content, we recommend the following alternative Mosaic macros:

Lozenge macro

Lozenges provide an interactive, visual way of linking to other content. Users can replicate this functionality in Cloud with Buttons, Interactive Banner, and Advanced Cards macros.

Of the three options, Advanced Cards look the most similar and use a similar format to Lozenges.

Clickable macro

The Clickable macro lets you turn content inside it into a clickable link. With Buttons and Advanced Cards, users can achieve a similar effect.
It's also possible to link text using Confluence Cloud's built-in Link tool, though you can't include images this way.

Fancy Bullets macro

Fancy Bullets provide an easy way to use different bullet types or images for your bullet lists. While not exactly the same, the effect can be recreated with Advanced Cards.
