What is a Risk Assessment?

A risk assessment is a systematic process of identifying potential risks, analysing their potential impact and likelihood, and determining the best way to mitigate or eliminate them. It is a crucial tool for proactive project management, helping teams anticipate challenges before they become major problems.

Why should your company use a Risk Assessment?

Conducting a risk assessment is fundamental to successful project delivery, helping to:

Prevent and mitigate problems

By identifying risks early, teams can develop contingency plans and take proactive steps to prevent them from occurring or to lessen their impact, saving time and resources down the line.

Improve project planning and forecasting

A thorough understanding of potential risks leads to more realistic project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation, increasing the accuracy of your planning.

Enhance communication and stakeholder confidence

A formal risk assessment demonstrates due diligence and transparent planning. It keeps the entire team and key stakeholders informed and confident that potential challenges are being managed effectively.

What elements should a Risk Assessment page include?

Clear keys organised in tabs

There are several parts of a risk assessment where numbers and/or colour coding are used to describe the risk. To understand these numbers and colour codes, keys are crucial. Using Tabs is a great way to keep this information organised and easy for the team to navigate, while Advanced Cards give clear meanings to each colour and scale.

Risk assessment form

Use a table to record the different risks your company or project is facing. The numbers used to calculate the risk in the form must correlate with those in the keys to avoid confusion. Tooltips can be added to table headers to provide instructions for the necessary calculations without cluttering the page.
