What to do now that Atlassian is ending Data Center

The latest migration announcement is focusing minds. Here's how you can plan, migrate, and thrive beyond Data Center.
Atlassian recently announced that all of its Data Center products are being phased out. While Atlassian positions Cloud as the future, many teams (especially those with custom integrations or compliance requirements) now face tough decisions and will have to balance business continuity with long-term value.
But the good news is:
You're not alone. You have time. And you have help.
Kolekti is already Cloud-native and helping teams navigate this transition smoothly. We've created this guide to help you understand what's happening, what it means for your tools, and how you can move forward with confidence. For a broader look at what this change means for the Atlassian ecosystem and how our parent company, The Adaptavist Group, is supporting customers, read the blog Atlassian Data Center: what next? By our CTO, Jon Mort.
At the end of this blog, you'll find a list of links to useful resources to support your planning.
The end-of-life timeline
Atlassian's transition away from Data Center will follow a three-phase timeline:
- 30 March 2026: New Data Center subscriptions and Marketplace app sales will end for new customers.
- 30 March 2028: Existing customers will no longer be able to renew licences, buy new apps, or expand users.
- 28 March 2029: All remaining licences will expire, and all Data Center instances will become read-only.
This timeline gives you room to plan. But it also means the sooner you start, the more options you'll have.
Complexity requires lead time
For many organisations, moving from Data Center to Cloud is not just a technical switch. Migrations often take six to twelve months, and can take even longer for enterprises with legacy systems, custom workflows, or regulatory requirements.
The challenge is not only in the technology but in the planning. Teams that wait too long risk compressing timelines and rushing decisions, all during a period that has seen countless global upheavals. Starting early gives you space to map dependencies, involve stakeholders, and manage change without disruption.
Atlassian is introducing new deployment models, including FedRAMP-authorised environments (Atlassian Government Cloud) and Sovereign Cloud options. These investments mean that even the most regulated customers can find a viable path forward, but you'll still need time to evaluate, prepare, and test.
Cloud migration comes with questions, and that's normal
Atlassian has been clear: Cloud is already the default platform for almost all customers. Today, 99% of their 300,000+ customers are on Cloud or on a pathway to cloud, and 75% of the most complex and regulated organisations are either already there or on a defined path. Their new Atlassian Ascend program is designed to guide every customer, no matter their size or complexity. Read Atlassian's announcement here.
This shift is driven by capability. Data Center was the right solution over a decade ago, but it can no longer support the innovation Atlassian is building into Cloud: enterprise-wide search, AI-powered teammates like Rovo, advanced analytics, and expanded data residency options. So framing the move as an upgrade isn't marketing, it's reality.
Every organisation will approach migration differently. Smaller teams can take advantage of Atlassian's self-service tools, while large enterprises can use the new FastShift program, which accelerates migration timelines to as little as two to six months. For highly complex cases, Atlassian offers a deeper partnership through the Solution Design Acceleration program.
The key to making this transition successful, to making it an upgrade, is not only adopting the right technology, but also aligning it with strategy. With the right planning and deployment model, migration becomes an opportunity to transform how your team operates and performs.

Still on Data Center? That's okay, for now
Kolekti will continue to support Data Center customers in alignment with Atlassian's timeline. That includes compatibility updates and migration-focused improvements to help teams make the move when the time is right.
We're not going to push you to jump early. We're here to help you stay in control. But when the platform you depend on has a known expiration date, the smartest move is to start preparing.
This isn't just about hosting. It's about how you work
Migrating to Cloud is more than a technical shift. You get the chance to rethink how your team manages knowledge, collaborates across silos, and shares information across departments and time zones.
With Kolekti, you can:
- Build intuitive, fully branded knowledge bases in Confluence
