Make your Confluence content clearer and easier for users to consume with footnotes and tooltip references.

For anyone working in academia, education, law, or the sciences, the concept of referencing will be familiar–and perhaps painful! Although necessary, it can be tiresome and time-consuming to add references to Confluence pages and documents. That’s why our dedicated Content Formatting Macros development team has created two simple solutions for Confluence Cloud: Tooltip and Footnotes.

Whether you’re looking to add annotations, acronyms, definitions or more formal, academic-style referencing, these two powerful macros will solve your problems. Here’s what you need to know about these tools, and where you can find them:

Tooltip

The tooltip macro is ideal for keeping Confluence pages clean and tidy, thanks to its ability to keep text hidden from sight until users hover over or click a dedicated Tooltip icon. This is a deceptively simple plain text macro that can be used anywhere on a Confluence page, making it easy to add detail without taking up space or altering the design of your carefully constructed Confluence page.
If you don’t require formal academic referencing, Tooltip is the perfect macro for adding Confluence page references. They’re dynamic, increasing the interactivity of your content, and easy to use. Check out our video to see them in action!

Footnotes

Footnotes are a common referencing style used in professional and academic writing, but it can be tedious and time consuming to manually add footnotes to Confluence content.
Within Content Formatting for Confluence Cloud you’ll find a pair of macros that help to overcome this challenge. The Footnote macro lets you insert and display footnote entries on any Confluence page, while the Footnote Summary macro gives you the option to list all footnotes at the bottom of a page or to group footnotes together in different sections.
This flexibility means you can tailor your Confluence referencing to suit your user experience intentions, keeping your pages tidy and free from the clutter that in-text referencing can lead to. You may wish to create a dedicated Confluence referencing section or break up your footnotes throughout the page.
