What is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 (also known as ISO/IEC 27001:2013) is an international standard for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS). Meeting the criteria for this strict standard shows that a company is committed and able to manage information securely and safely.
ISO 27001 certification indicates a company's systematic approach to managing and protecting sensitive information based on industry best practices. The standard outlines the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving ISMS.

To achieve ISO 27001, a company has to excel in all three areas of the CIA Triad. The CIA Triad is the backbone of information security management. Each letter stands for a different principle:

Confidentiality: Only people who should have access to information can access it.

Integrity: The data a company uses or stores is reliable, accurate, and not erased or damaged.

Availability: A company and its clients can access information whenever needed to fulfil business and customer needs.

Why does ISO 27001 matter?

As the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) itself puts it: "Certification to ISO 27001 is one way to demonstrate to stakeholders and customers that you are committed and able to manage information securely and safely."

There are other benefits, too:
  • Enhanced Security: By following the standard's guidelines, companies strengthen their information security measures. This reduces the risk of cyber attacks.
  • Customer Trust: Implementing ISO 27001 shows a commitment to safeguarding customer information. This earns customer trust and loyalty.
  • Internal Efficiency: Well-structured ISMS streamline internal processes. This improves efficiency and minimises disruptions caused by security incidents.
